it's a tale of two teams. the giants celebrate a historic victory advancing in the playoffs, while the a's remarkable season just came to an end in the past 30 minutes. good evening, i'm julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville. it's a rare october night. both the bay area baseball times. giants and the a's facing much different playoff games. the giants did it on the road, the a's were home, but losing to the detroit tigers 6-0.

patty is at the coliseum. >> reporter: this magical season has come to an end as you can see folks are still filing out of the stadium. it's hard to describe how they are feeling. setting off fire crackers. you can hear people cheering for the a's. this group is actually cheering for the giants right now. now they had such high hopes for the team tonight. it is really hard to describe how they felt leaving the stadium for the last time tonight. >> it is a tough way to watch the end of the game, the end of the year. but again we are just thankful with how well they played so far. >> i wanted another game and another series and the team deserves it as they have worked so hard. it was just really an amazing year. they are wonderful. we'll see you next year.

>> reporter: you can see them really taking the loss personally because the fan base has been as much as a part of the story of the team. now, they gave a standing ovation to the team at the end of the season. they have amazed the season reinvigorating the franchise. reporting live in oakland, patti lee, ktvu news. mark ibanez joins us right now. the a's never seemed to be in it. >> we won't have the remake with the bay bridge world series. but the a's when they walk off the field tonight, it was for the last time in 2012. no gatorade throwing, no pies, nothing like that. it all belongs to the tigers in this one. austin jackson gets the score started. 2-0 lead for them out of the third inning.

jared parker pitched well. but not well enough. and then for the tigers. four runs in the 7th. prince fielder with a little fly ball, robbing them just a couple of times. not so, getting a little blooper to fall on in. with a weapon like justin verlander as the tigers just needed to give oakland a chance, a four-hit complete game shut out. and one of the arrows last night grounding out to end it, 6-0 the final 11 strikeouts for verlander giving them 22 total in the two games that he pitched. and the divisional series record itself, 6-0 the final is the tigers that do celebrate tonight. but much to the credit of the a's fans as they stuck around the a's fans waved good-bye as they were shouting let's go oakland down to the very finish as we will have more. >> all right, thank you, mark.

>> reporter: in their only debate, joe biden and paul ryan pulled no punches on how to handle iran. >> what, are you going to go to war? >> we want to prevent war. >> it is mathematically possible. it's been done before. it's precisely what we have been proposing. >> it's been done a couple of times actually. >> oh, now you're jack kennedy? [ laughter ] >> tonight, biden also made sure to go after mitt romney in a way many say president obama failed to do in his first debate a week ago. >> for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility for their lives. my friend recently in a speech in washington said 30% of the american people are takers. these people are my mom and dad, the people i grew up, my neighbors. they pay more effective tax than governor romney pays in his federal income tax. >> reporter: yet paul ryan did not let up on the

administration on obama care and taxes. >> now, we think government taking 28% of a family and that business income is enough. president obama, he thinks they ought to take the small business income. >> now, some early polling done right after the debate tonight. show that people are largely split over who came out on top. we're live in the newsroom, eric rasmussen. >> now, a live look where students formed their own opinions as they watched tonight's debate. >> we met the students backing up romney, obama, even the ron paul supporter. and for many at the university, the historic debate between the vice presidential candidates hit home. >> they started it over to watch the vice presidential match up. and they watched and listened. >> i watched it as well a couple weeks ago. obama kind of left me hanging

there. seeming to be weak on the spot. >> i think biden was extremely unprofessional, disappointed, basically embarrassed by his performance tonight that he is our vice president. >> i would probably call it a draw. >> reporter: the chair of the university's political science department said congressman ryan was too flat and that vice president biden was too striking. >> she was pointing his finger at the questionnaire and seemed to be a little too assertive. ryan was the opposite, seeming to dance around a lot of the questions. >> reporter: the most memorable moment is when they were asked their opinion about abortion. >> now, i believe that life begins at conception. and that's why those are the reasons why i'm pro-life. >> i accept my churches position on abortion. i accepted my personal life. but i refuse to impose it on equally devowed christians, muslims, jews, and i just refused to impose that on others. >> i'm catholic and it was nice

to hear them both say that they are practicing and that they respect other religions as well as their own. but i think that a lot of the policies, they forget about their religion. >> biden's answer was well said. i think that is probably how most people, at least most people i know, they kind of view the idea of abortion. >> reporter: now, the political science professor said there was no major gaps or lines, but that they were well prepared. live in santa clara, california, i'm maureen naylor. >> many people join mitt romney as they watched the debate at his hotel in asheville, north carolina. romney was campaigning there earlier in the day and said he was certain that paul ryan would do great. president obama caught the first part of the debate on air force one. the president had been campaigning and fundraising in south florida. the president called his running mate earlier today wishing him good luck.

even higher. we are very concerned about this view. >> friends of the missing woman began searching this evening near where the burned vehicle was found looking for clues. there are several rewards being offered for the information in this case. detectives from the hercules police department are in king county, washington today investigating the killing of a bay area schoolteacher. they are considered persons of interest in a series of crimes that started in southern california moving north. and they were killed last friday night. the bay area detectives are hoping to interview the occupy l and to take a look at evidence recovered from the car. there is a new twist tonight in the case of san francisco sheriff. they are one of four supervisors who voted against the removal. today, kim suggested voters demand a recall in an e-mail to the constituents where they said that they have been,

"greatly diminished" and they suggested that she would support a recall. the director said that any recall requires supporters to have 48,000 signatures or 10% of all registered voters. those signatures would have to be collected within 160 days. a special election would then be called or a recall could go before voters in next november's election. we are learning more tonight about the suspect arrested during the protest in the district of san francisco late last night. a total of 19 people were taken into custody after protesters briefly took over a residential building as a part of the world home he is day demonstration. and of those arrested, 8 are from san francisco. four are from berkeley. five are from out of state. and 2 are from out of the country. the suspects, they are all facing felony charges. damage to the building is estimated at $3,000. officers move on in as neighbors have been told to get

out. all of a sudden the s.w.a.t. team showed up. what was going on inside a house that forced police to lock down the neighborhood? and it is cool and cloudy out there tonight. i'm tracking more showers for you on friday. she's been missing for nearly 25 years. the significant detail on new clues that could be up in the case. the street in vallejo. live with the surprising way that police apprehended a bomb- making suspect. >> reporter: his house is right behind us. you can see the light on the porch, the white truck with law enforcement walking around outside. within the hours of the bomb squad that blew up some of his stockpile. rattling windows, setting off car alarms in a neighborhood where people are already jittery. >> we had no idea what was going on. >> reporter: they her honored that their streets were barricaded. >> we were able to get home. >> reporter: they spent hours clearing a house of explosives. >> they are home meat devices, dangerous enough that we are taking the precautions that we are taking. >> reporter: police were tipped.

the man who lives here has been making and debtty nateing explosives as they came with a search warrant, knocking on their neighbors doors to evacuate them. >> i went to go and gather some things. before i knew it, they were knocking on the doors again. >> and then the suspect emerged. >> they came out curious to what was going on as he was recognized, taken into custody. >> reporter: he told police what he had in the house, but they took hours. >> kids are walking to school in the morning. we walk to church on the weekends. >> reporter: neighbors who pass the house, they say that it never grew their attention. >> you know i have a family. i have a kid that it was kind of scary to think about that, making the homemade bombs in their backyards. >> reporter: experts decided that it was safer for them to destroy at least some of the explosives rather than move them. >> reporter: police are not yet releasing the suspect's name. as they do say he's a man in

his 50s. as far as they know, he has not made any threats associated with the explosives. we are being told that they will plan to gather more of their materials and explode it. this promises to reare main an active scene throughout the night. today, the mother of the little girl who vanished back in 1988 spoke out about the possibility that there may finally be a break in the case. as we first report last night, it is now being tested. she was just 9 years old when she was kiapped. the bone is believed to be from the girl between the ages of 5- 13. the bone was found mixed in with the other murdered victim. her remains were taken out from

a well in linden. they were known as the speed killers. frightening moments for children on board the school bus. two students were reported seriously hurt. they suffered minor injuries. and san francisco has been through the project moving forward thanks to a big infusion of the federal funding. city leaders were on hand when they announced that the federal government, they would provide $954 million. they said that the project will be about much more than just money. >> it's about jobs, it's about commerce, it's about quality there, quality of life. it is about building up the infrastructure of the america.

they will link them to china town as completion will be expected in seven years. they have their opponents too. one group filed the lawsuit to stop it because of the impact here on the union square. issuing some good news today. they said that 53% of the schools across california, they either met or surpassed that test goal this year, a 4% increase this year. only 20% of the schools met that there. they said that the schools met the challenge despite their obstacles created by the budget cuts. the students are not necessarily learning more, but getting better at taking tests instead. we posted a link with details on all bay area schools. just scroll down to the web link section. the stock markets rallied on encouraging job news, then fell. they ended the day down 18 points. they lost about two points.

analysts blamed the global economy. they reported a decline in threap mications for the unemployment benefits, falling to 329,000 which is a four and a half year low. more than 12 million americans are still without work. delivering a blow to apple today by denying our request. they said they failed to show that this to hurt their own smart phone sales, allowing them to sell the product while they continue that dispute. six more dead birds have tested positive for them across the country. the birds were found here, saying that cooler temperatures mean that this season is

a scout denied the eagle scout rank because he is gay appeared on the national talk show this week. they sat down with them today as they watched them talk to the nation about his story. >> reporter: julie, ryan went to los angeles to tape the ellen degenerous show yesterday. tonight we talked to them about their battle with the boy scouts to recognize their

achievements. >> reporter: today, family and friends watched the teen walk into the spotlight. >> thank you, i'm proud of you. you're an amazing young man. getting national attention. saying he was denied an eagle scout award because he is openly gay. the family appeared with ryan, getting a big surprise. >> today ellen gave him a $20,000 scholarship. >> on your way to college. i'm proud of you. >> everybody around us during the commercial break was coming over, high fiving us. there i am with tears down my face, trying to hold it all together. i am so proud of him. >> reporter: we talked to ryan by phone. >> i was a little shocked. not expecting it at all. so it totally blew me away. >> reporter: he turned 18 passing the deadlines for

were sent to out of state prisons. federal authorities are going after the economic core based in los angeles. today, they designated the big gang, that allows them to freeze the assets of the gang members who often used that to move their profit. they are said to have about 50,000 members worldwide. new information about a bomb scare on board a bus in the south bay. a 15-year-old boy is to blame. they admitted to leaving a package on the bus. the boy was cited for reporting a false explosive which is a misdemeanor released to the custody of his parents. the incident closed a part of the highway for several hours last night during the evening commute. the san jose police officer

association is accusing the mayor of illegally transferring money to the councilman and their re-election campaign. the complaint filed today says that the can committee linked to the mayor's if he thinks reform campaign, they illegally funneled 1 -- funneled $100,000 as they approved the transfer because like measure b that they will be questioning the impacts on the fiscal reform. that will be tonight. a drive-by shooting that killed the top security official who had worked at the american embassy for 11 years. authorities said that the attack could be the work of the militants as it will be raising concerns that they could be regaining strength after a series of setbacks in a year- long campaign against the militants. and in pakistan, that teenage girl shot by the taliban gunman was moved to the country's top military hospital today for further treatment as they were shot in her head and neck, targeted by a taliban gunman because he is an outspoken advocate for the girls

proposition 35 aims to increase the prosecution of the human and sex trafficking. showing us that a dark side of the bay area that few will see and why some say that prop 35 is not the solution to the problem. here is tonight's special report. >> reporter: the ladies of the night of san jose sometimes work in the day. >> we want to know what you're doing. >> what are you doing? >> nothing, just hanging out. >> reporter: during our ride along, we saw several women who are prostitutes. this is a popular place for prostitution. to give you an idea on how big the problem is, you'll need to go online. >> reporter: but they had do most of their investigation on the human trafficking from their desk. looking up websites right here. >> and that will be young. >> reporter: he said that he has found more than 44 juveniles working as prostitutes. mostly advertising online.

but the human trafficking t is not always sex related. these photos will come from the sweat shop bus from the southern california. helping immigrants to work in homes, restaurants, other businesses. >> well, they are working 18 hours a day being paid very little money. in the last ten years, the santa clara university on the community law? , they have helped 80 traffic victims to the south bay. they say as many as 3,000 victims have been identified over the past few years. but it is unknown just how many truly are on out this because of the threats facing the workers. >> they are interested. if you leave we will call the police as you don't have documents to be arrested. >> reporter: chris kelly was facebook's first general council and ran for the state attorney general in 2010. now pushing for few many sex and human trafficking laws to proposition 35 on this november's ballot. >> we just haven't seen anything yet. and for the actions, doing it

comprehensively. >> in the past, prop 35 would increase the criminal human sex trafficking. the prison sentences could be up for 15 years in life. and that they would be used for the victim services for law enforcement. they would require anyone convicted of sex trafficking to register as a sex offender to force them to provide their internet identities. >> we thought that we could make a very aggressive statement for them to the prosecutors in the state. it and by giving them the new tools as we could better train the law enforcement. >> they live in had san francisco, and is the face of the opposition to the proposition 35. she is the mother of three adult children. one is a veteran, another is a lawyer and the third is high up. >> i currently work as a prostitute. >> for how long? >> 22 years and i will be working for another 22 years. >> reporter: she represents a group for the legal educational and research project. saying that the human trafficking laws on the books
